Calvin Bassey has been confirmed as the new captain of Fulham by manager Álvaro Arbeloa. The Nigerian centre-back has already led the side in each of their first three Premier League matches this season.
Arbeloa, who took over as Fulham manager this summer, identified Bassey as a strong leader within the squad. The 26-year-old defender has been with the club for four seasons and has accumulated significant experience through many appearances. "It’s a privilege," Bassey told reporters. "Being able to captain this club is unbelievable."
Bassey's leadership style
The defender described his approach as relaxed rather than a stereotypical fiery leader. "Nah, not really, that’s not me! I’m more chill," he said. "Before the game, I’m just happy, smiling as always." His responsibilities extend off the pitch, with Bassey mentioning he looks after 19-year-old teammate Josh King, whose mother gave him permission to do so. King has already scored twice for Fulham this campaign, including a goal in the 2-3 defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this month.
A tough start to the season
The captaincy comes during a challenging period for the club. Fulham currently sit 18th in the Premier League with just one point from their opening four matches. Their recent form reads one win, one draw and three losses from the last five games across all competitions. The team's last outing was a goalless draw away at Liverpool's Anfield on September 12, a result that provided a solid defensive platform but left them still searching for their first league win.
Despite the difficult start, the stalemate against the reigning European heavyweights demonstrated the resilience Arbeloa is trying to build. The club has scored four goals but conceded seven, leaving them with a negative three goal difference. They are 11 points behind early leaders Arsenal. Looking ahead
Fulham's immediate focus shifts to their next Premier League fixture, a home match against Manchester United on September 20. United currently occupy 13th place in the table. The Cottagers will be aiming to build on their clean sheet at Anfield to secure those key first three points of the campaign. Tom Cairney remains sidelined and is listed on the club's injuries page.
Bassey's appointment as a permanent leader signals Arbeloa's faith in a player who has grown into a key figure at Craven Cottage over four seasons. His first official task as confirmed skipper will be to lead the team out against Manchester United next weekend.
