Fulham have emerged as contenders to sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, with new manager Alvaro Arbeloa targeting the 22-year-old as his first transfer acquisition. The Cottagers, currently 11th in the Premier League with 52 points from 38 games, are competing with Leeds and Crystal Palace for the Northern Ireland international.
Why Charles Fits Arbeloa's Plan
Charles, who averaged 2.1 tackles per 90 minutes in the Championship last season, offers defensive grit that could complement Fulham’s midfield. His six goals and two assists in 38 matches highlight his all-around capabilities. Arbeloa, appointed earlier this week, emphasized building a competitive squad ahead of pre-season: “I am sure we are going to enjoy an incredible journey together.”
Competition from Leeds and Palace
Sky Sports reports that Southampton can extend Charles’ contract by an additional year, strengthening their negotiating position. Fulham, fresh from a 2-0 win over Newcastle on May 24, 2026, and riding a two-game winning streak, face a challenge as Leeds and Crystal Palace also pursue the midfielder.
Replacing Berge’s Influence
With Erik Berge attracting interest from Manchester United, Charles could serve as a direct replacement. Berge averaged 1.8 tackles per 90 in the Premier League last season, slightly below Charles’ defensive output. Michael O’Neill, Charles’ international manager, praised his performance: “Out of possession, the amount of balls he recovered and won from being second favourite was outstanding.”
Fulham’s recent form (WWDDL in their last five games) and a goal difference of -4 this season suggest room for improvement. Securing Charles would signal Arbeloa’s intent to bolster a midfield that conceded 51 goals in 2025/26.
